Future Hub

In keeping with this year's motto ‘Join the Future’, the Future Hub is celebrating its premiere. The top topics include digitalization, sustainability, skills shortages, cybersecurity and social media. Best practices, feedback rounds, panel discussions or informal talks - the moderated interactive communication area creates space for sharing experiences and collaboration within the industry.

On Wednesday, September 17, representatives from the Fraunhofer Institute IWS, Nederman, EWM, RWTH Aachen University, PiWeCo, and other organizations will give presentations on the future of the industry. In addition, four young companies will present their innovative ideas in the Start-Up Pitch.

„Extremely Dynamic Laser Cutting System for Complex Contours (EDcut) – Customized Solution Adapted to Cutting Task Requirements“

Highly brilliant laser sources have shifted technological cutting speeds into new dimensions. With contour cuts, the motion system limits the utilization of the cutting potential. A new solution for a highly dynamic cutting device is presented and the significance of the dynamic parameters is considered.

„Digital Transformation in Welding and Cutting: Unlocking Efficiency, Safety and Transparency with Smart Dust Collection Systems“

Digitalization is fundamentally reshaping the world of joining, cutting, and coating. Smart digital technologies enable more precise, efficient, and safer production—from planning and welding to quality assurance. Real-time data collection via intelligent sensors, IoT devices, and cloud-based platforms allows manufacturers to monitor, analyze, and optimize processes continuously. This leads to lower energy consumption, reduced downtime, and predictive maintenance. With digital twins, automated reporting, and adaptive control systems, production becomes more transparent and data-driven. Companies that embrace digitalization today position themselves for competitive advantage in the connected manufacturing environment of tomorrow.

"The (magic) triangle of welding technology - three goals in one process: efficiency, time savings and quality"

In management theory, the magic triangle describes the conflicting goals of time, costs and quality - a principle that can be directly applied to industrial manufacturing processes. In welding technology, this conflict of objectives becomes particularly clear: speed often leads to a loss of quality, high quality usually requires a lot of effort and costs, and economic solutions rarely leave room for process optimisation in all areas at the same time.

This presentation shows how this dilemma can be resolved with innovative technologies. The EWM React arc process will be used as an example to demonstrate how modern welding technology can address all three objectives simultaneously. The React process opens up possibilities due to its stability, which has a direct and significant impact on quality, costs and, in particular, productivity. The innovative power of the EWM React process will be illustrated using practical application examples and comparative data. This will be supplemented by an examination of the integration of this process into the EWM ecosystem, such as seamless digitalisation, integrated quality monitoring and user-friendly operating concepts.

The presentation invites you to rethink the classic target triad - not as a compromise, but as an integrative solution approach through technological progress in welding technology.

"Resource-efficient wear protection through additive coatings made of metal matrix composites (MMCs)"

Powder-based laser cladding produces innovative, wear-resistant MMC coatings that not only increase the service life of tools, but also make the use of materials significantly more efficient - a real alternative to PVD-coated PM steels, for example. Discover the potential of a new generation of multifunctional coatings!

"Digitalization in welding technology: opportunities and benefits for SMEs"

Where are digital solutions already being used and what advantages do they bring for small and medium-sized companies? This presentation is about the welding technology itself on the one hand and the accompanying processes, such as the documentation of these processes, on the other. The presentation will also look at the prospects for the industry, which options are currently being introduced and why one should consider them. The focus will be on opportunities that have not yet been fully exploited and potentials that still can be utilized.

"On the path to high performance single pass welding in thick sections. We boost your productivity by up to 10x"

WeldNova is a German deep tech spinoff transforming industrial welding with its proprietary WeldMagnet technology. This single-pass, magnetically controlled welding approach offers massive improvements (10x) in cost, speed, and CO₂ emissions, compared to traditional multipass welding. Backed by over ten years of research, and an outstanding scientific founding team, the technology can create reliable single-pass welds in heavy metal sheets (>12 mm). It can also safely cross gaps of up to 3 mm without touching the workpiece or using consumables.

“Fine dust in the workplace: facts, consequences, solutions”

Fine dust is one of the biggest but often overlooked health risks in many work environments - from industry and trade to production facilities.

Invisible particles, such as welding fumes, can have long-term effects on health. Respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, and other serious illnesses are the result.

Background information, regulations, and protective measures for fine dust exposure in the workplace are highlighted, and it is shown how companies can deal with this innovatively using Dustlight.
